Girl's Basketball

The girls basketball team jsut had their first scrimmage on 11/20/12 against a school from Queens. We started off with really little intensity on the court. Tha first half of the game did not show how the team usually played. The passes were sloppy, fouling in the first few minutes, walking back on offense and there were really little taking on the court. The score was something we didnt expect, it was a close score between the two teams with Baruch leading with only a couple of points. After that first half, we got our head into the game and second half we had the intensity, running down the courts, and talking on court. We started to knock down many shots and got a lead of 10 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. We ended the game winning by 20 with a 36-16 but the team and the coaches new we could have done so much better. With this scrimmage, we have a lot to work on and we all know the way we played in the second half, that is how we have to start our first game of the season on monday. Come support the girls on thier frist gaem right after thanksgiving break. It's a home game at 4:30 in Baruch College. Other games are already posted on PSAL so go take a look or ask one of the girls on the team. Go blue Devils!!

Is it over?

It has been a while since the most recent volleyball game.
Many had came to our volleyball games and it was highly appreciated. The Baruch Volleyball Team never had many supporters cheering because we do not home games and it becomes a hassle for those who actually did want to come and support at other schools. However, many of these supporters came through and our team was thankful. Thankful to know that someone acknowledges our wins and our lost.
With every lost, I would feel a pain inside. I take loses and wins pretty seriously, and that is why I feel pain with every lost. I also take every win seriously and this makes me too hyper. Though with every lost, someone on the team would come up to me and say "Cheer up Peony! We will do better next time!" The positivity of the team was extraordinary and it made me think even more positively. My coach told me that playing games are not only because of winning, but try to have fun and find pleasure in playing the sports that you love. I have learned a lot from him and it will stay with me forever; whether it was him enlightening me about life or teaching me how to be a better volleyball player.
But is the volleyball season really over? Technically, it may be over on the PSAL board but you can play volleyball anywhere, anytime and play with the people you love.
This Friday may mark the end of our PSAL games and it may be the last time that the team can all sit together, with our coaches and have fun. But I know that this is not the end.
I truly wish that the Volleyball season can continue, not only because I personally love this sport, not only because I enjoy the school's spirit, and not only because it is great to win, but because I was lucky enough to have amazing team members.Though this may be slightly unrealistic, I know that I had enjoyed my time and I have made amazing memories.
It's not over until it's officially over, so for now, I'll say: I LOVE YOU GUYS AND I'LL SEE YOU SOON!

Girls’ Basketball Bottle Competition

Have you noticed large bags filled with plastic bottles and aluminum cans in your classrooms?
They don’t look very fitting for the classroom; however, it is for a very good cause. This year, the girls’ basketball team has lost its funding to rent the gym in Baruch College. The Baruch’s girls’ basketball team is very strong. My jaw dropped when I looked at the team’s record for the past few years. They ended each of their seasons on a very strong note. With this much potential, how could you possibly let it all go to waste? I really don’t understand how it is possible for their funding to be cut. Seriously, it’s ridiculous. I think that this bottle and can collecting competition was pretty clever. It’s a unique method to fundraise to get their funding back for the gym, and it’s also a great way to get the whole school involved, both recycling and making money. Who says that you have to be on a sports team to be a part of the school? Support your school’s girls’ basketball team and every time you finish a bottle, put it in your advisor’s big plastic bag. The girls’ basketball team will go around collecting your advisory’s bag of bottles every Monday. Remember, this is a competition. Bring on the competitiveness and show us what you are made of! Winners get a prize from the prize box! Good luck y’all!

Soccer (Girls and Boys)

Soccer season is coming to an end. The boys’ soccer team just had their last game on the 15th of October and the girls’ soccer team’s last game is on the 22nd of October. With a 5-5 record right now, we are in a crunch time to see if the girls team would make it to the play offs once again.
Starting off with only exactly 11 players to now 19, we improved a lot as a team. Despite the time and effort that we have to put into the sport, it always pays off at the end. We lose as a team and we win as a team. As long as we tried our hardest and pushed ourselves up and beyond.
There are times when we would hate going to practices, simply because we want to hang out with our friends. But there are other times when something funny would happen when we go to practice and make it enjoyable.
Being on sports team takes a lot of commitment and a lot of time but if you love the sport go for it. Being on two teams, both the girls’ soccer team and the girls’ basketball team, it is a lot of work but I love the rush during games and the fans cheering for us; it is what keeps me going. The excitement of that is the best. That is why it is so great to be on a sports team, or any team. You would build bonds with your teammates, make fun of each other, and even if something embarrassing happens, they would laugh it off or at each other. Go for it; don’t let anything hold you back from playing a sport you love.

The Bieber Transformation

Over the past few years, Justin Bieber’s image has changed drastically. He went from being a baby-faced pop star to a mature young artist. His physical appearance went through a complete transformation. One of the major changes was the hairstyle. He went from the “Bieber-Hair” to his new short look, which makes him look more mature. I personally think that his new look really suits him and actually makes him look his age. Not only did his appearance change even his sound changed and became more mature. His new album Believe was released about 3 months ago on June 19th and the music is just such a contrast to his older albums such as “My World” and “Never Say Never”.
Many people have changed their view on him. People who used to despise him and his music have began to like his new songs such as “Boyfriend” and “As long as you love me”. His music went from classic pop teenage songs to songs with deeper meanings which attract an older audience. The only downside is he may lose some of his younger audience because some may feel that he’s too grown-up now. Well, I like Justin Bieber a lot more now that he has matured. I think more people should give him a chance and stop putting him down if they have never actually listened to his music. As they always say don’t knock it until you try it.

Blue Devils Newsletter Issue 1

First day of school
For some people, the first day of school is full of excitement and opportunity. For others, the first day of school is a wake up call for a year full of work and stress. Were you excited or prepared to be back at school? Did your summer memories flash in your head- were you not ready to give up the warm weather, the late wake ups, the late night hang outs? Oh well it had to end sooner or later. For our freshmen this would be a whole new start for them, new classes, new school, new friends. For our returning students, the new school year brings excitement and challenges. Whether it's preparing for exams or extracurricular activities, the focus on success is of paramount importance. The objective as you go through the year is to set goals for yourself and have a plan to help achieve your potential. My suggestion to you... Don't wait too long to get involved. As Soskind always says, “be assertive, not passive.”

Blue Devil’s Soccer Team Climb’s to the Top!
Heading into the 2012 season, the Baruch Varsity Boys Soccer team will feature many new faces from various soccer clubs and well-renowned programs around the New York Metropolitan area.  After a very good off-season and the infusion of young talent, the team looks poised to make some noise this year.

Leading the way for the Blue Devils will be college prospect, Erick Criollo with his all-around play in the midfield.  After a down year in the midfield, Erick will be joined by outstanding freshmen, Dario and Blendi Shala.  Still, the strength of this squad rests on the shoulders of its backfield.  The ability of the defense to keep opposing offenses in check will determine just how far this Blue Devil team can go.  Leading the way will be senior captain and goalkeeper, Daniel Dornbaum.  Protecting him will be senior backs, Jeremy Nadel and Jonathan Tyler, both of whom are four year varsity players and have grown much since their freshman seasons.
After a disappointing 2011 season, the team will look to rebound with a strong 2012 campaign.  The commitment from senior leaders on the team as well as the enthusiasm of the incoming freshman combined with the determination of a talented sophomore class suggests that the team is ready to compete and atone for mistakes and misfortunes of the previous season.
The team will play its first game on Monday, September 10th at the East River Park Field C.

ITS GAME TIME!

The Baruch boy’s soccer team came out with a victory over Art & Design in their opening game of the season with a score of 5-3. A hat trick by Wesley McGinnis and two goals by Erick Criollo gave them the five goals to put them ahead. The boys were struggling at the start, losing 2-1 at one point, but after half time, they came to a resounding comeback, earning 3 goals in a matter of minutes.
This was a special victory for the boys team since they had such a tough season last year, with forfeits happening constantly they were sent down to the developmental league. They hope to turn it around this season and clearly show promise from this exciting win over Art & Design, whose record against Baruch is now 2-1 after this great win for the boys in blue.

Girls Soccer Season Has Arrived!
September 8th, 2012 marked the beginning of league play for the Baruch Lady Blue Devils Soccer Team. Baruch’s first opponent was Environmental Studies High School. With only 12 players, the girls knew they would clock a lot of minutes. This was a new experience for some the girls who had never had the opportunity to play in a real game. The situation motivated the team and they showed a great deal of heart and determination coming away with a 4-2 victory. Coached by Howard Soskind and Michael Mei, The Blue Devils were able to get off to an early 1-0 lead with a goal from Patricia Curran. Curran was a real force in the game, and added 3 more before the 80 minutes were up. Although there were some early season jitters, coaches were optimistic about what they observed. First time goalie, Mikaela Bordonaro, made some excellent saves. She looked comfortable in the goal and showed a lot of promise. Maria Contreras, a second year player that did not get many minutes last year, played well at Forward. She made a beautiful assist that lead to a goal. The team is made up of some returning players and many new characters. It will be exciting to see how our players get together and build the foundation necessary to be successful. Follow our girls on the PSAL website or come out to a game and support them. Go Lady Blue Devils!

Girl’s Varsity Soccer Season
After a strong display of soccer skill from the girl’s soccer team in their first game of the season against Environmental studies, the girls headed for a much tougher test. The Eleanor Roosevelt soccer team showed early dominance as they were up at half time with the score of 4-0. Even though the Baruch girl’s soccer team trailed the whole time, the girls gave it their all. Yes the girls lost by a final score of 6-0 but many girls on the team showed an impressive display of soccer skills. From senior, Kaylin Pabon’s nice defensive stops, to sophomore, Mikaela Bordonaro's amazing saves and Patricia Curran's display of athleticism and heart. This team has a bright future and will move on from this lose as they continue to improve and move forward to their next game against School of the Future, September 20th.

         Volleyball Begins!

This year the volleyball team is looking forward to a productive and competitive season. Each season we have had a mix of brand new players who were just learning the game, and experienced veterans for those ‘newbies’ to learn from.  Players interested in trying out should be ready to commit to working hard each day, competing to the best of their ability, and most importantly learning skills that will help them not only on the volleyball court but in life as well.
