Contacts vs. Glasses

I've had glasses since middle school and throughout most of high school. It started with a pair of wire rimmed burgundy glasses. By my sophomore year I upgraded to a trendy, black plastic frame. And finally as a senior, my parents decided that I was responsible enough to get contacts. It was something that I've wanted for so long and I was so excited. I currently use Acuvue with hydraclear plus which are two week disposables.
Since the switch, its pretty darn clear, I am definitely a contacts type of girl. I never felt comfortable with glasses and I hated the feeling of something sitting on my face. I also noticed that a lot of oil around where the glasses touched my face so I made sure to sterilize my glasses at least once a week. My hair always got caught in my glasses and sometimes it was painful to release them. Although contacts are definitely a lot more work, I enjoy them a lot. Every contact wearer knows that it's so important to keep your hands clean. I don't know that I've ever used this much soap in my life.
But not everyone likes the hassle. So what do YOU prefer? Glasses or contacts?
And if you have 20/20 vision, then lucky you.
(Lookie at my owl friends creeping in the photo)

Jewelry-Making

Whenever I have free time, I like to spend it by doing something creative. Recently, I got hooked on creating my own jewelry. At first it started with simply beads on string, to complicated weaving of friendship bracelets, and now it’s a mixture of both. Since I’m allergic to the “fake metal” in most jewelry I decided to use cord, and the great thing about cord is it is very durable. When I don’t have ideas on making a bracelet, I go out and buy a book to teach me. I’m one of those people who learns quickly by instructions so, once I read it, I do it, and then I have it. And when I’m done making it, I like to wear it, showing off what I accomplished. Also when I give it to someone, like my sister or my mom it’s really satisfying to see someone else wearing something I made, that I put my hard work into. I have to say Michaels is my go-to store for all things art & crafts, and that is where I get all my beads. So far, I’ve only done bracelets, I find that, the more basic the weaving is, the less “pretty” the bracelet actually comes out. So I’ve stuck to more difficult time-consuming designs, and I’m so pleased with them. I hope that I can make a bunch, to give to my friends and family. Try something new, instead of buying your jewelry; make it for yourself, it’s so relaxing and fun.

Closet Essentials: Chambray Shirts

I love chambray shirts because of their versatility. They can be causal enough for school but also dressy enough for a party. It all depends on the shade of blue and what you pair it with. The collar will instantly make these shirts classy. With their denim appearance and the flexibility of cotton, they are just as important as a pair of jeans in any closet.
So how do you wear them if they look just like your everyday jeans?
There is no shame in wearing a chambray shirt with a pair of jeans, the trick is to make sure that your top and bottom are different shades of blue. Try breaking up the blue with a neutral color belt, brown or black work the best. If you don't like wearing too much blue, try pairing a chambray shirt with a pair of black leggings. Chambray shirts are usually long enough for anyone to wear with leggings with, it's also a very comfortable outfit for school.
Chambray shirts are so popular and I believe that even people with entirely different styles could own a chambray shirt and make it work.
American Eagle has good quality chambray shirts in various shades. With their current 40% off sale, it's in the mid $20.00 range. I usually wouldn't spend that much on just a shirt but because I know that I'll be wearing it for a long time, it's a good investment.
I prefer ones with the snap buttons just because its more convenient in the early mornings. If you're skeptical, go to a store and give these shirts a chance! They make outfits effortless! They also make an gift that any girl would appreciate (boys too)!

Bath and Body Works-PocketBac

Honestly I love going to Bath and Body Works, they always have products that smell really nice and the scents can be so relaxing. Whenever I walk into Bath and Body Works I always find myself walking out with one thing, an anti-bacterial hand gel. There is almost always a 5 for $5 dollar sale for the Pocket Bacs, and they smell so nice. I have a lot of fruity scents, like blueberry, and orange, but they have a lot more like candy cane, and gingerbread. They’re tiny, so you can take them anywhere with you, it can even fit in your pocket. They also have these PocketBac holders, some have animals on them, some have key chains, and some are just regular with glitter.  And the regulars ones aren’t ugly; they have a variety of colors for the PocketBacs. A good thing about these holders is you can connect them to anything, for instance, I and a lot of my friends carry them on our backpacks. Hand sanitizer is something to always have, a sink is not always around, especially after lunch and you only have 2 minutes to get to class.  There is a Bath and Body Works so close to our school, so pop in there to see something you like, also anything from Bath and Body Works could be a last-minute Christmas gift!

Girl's Basketball

Sorry for the late updates on the girl's basketball team.
It has been a rough season for us although we did win our first season game. With a 3-2 status right now, we all know both the team and coaches know that this shouldn't be how it is. We could have won the games we lost but those loses are only going to make us a stronger team. Like our coach says "I rather us lose in the beginning of the season than the end because we know what we can work on." Both loses were close games, one was a home game where we should have played hard in the first half. Second game was overtime, which we knew should no have happened and we should have won that game. All in all we knew that there were a lot of things that we needed to work on, such as driving in with our heads up, looking for open players, shooting in your range etc. We may not be undefeated this season this year but we know that we will work hard to get that play off sport in February. We will work and push ourselves to get further than we did last year. We will keep our heads up and keep playing the game we love. Nothing can stop us as long as we work as a team.
A quote that our coach goes by " I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." Michael Jordan  This tells us that even the best player failed so many times but still keep his head up and kept playing the game no matter what happened. He took the mistakes that he have done and learned from them and this is what we will do. Keep playing, and keep learning.

Instagram

Instagram is an app created for smart phones is used to take or upload pictures and share them with the people that follow you. Instagram has a bunch of different filters from you to choose from for you to alter your photo. You can make your picture look really bright, dark, black and white or even vintage. Instagram has become increasingly popular in the past year or so. It’s a pretty entertaining app because you can take pictures of anything from the Christmas tree at Rockefeller to your iced latte from Starbucks. Instagram is filled with pictures from a variety of topics. It’s a great way to keep up with your friends and see what they’re up too. It’s basically a Facebook made up of pictures. You can also follow celebrities that you like which I love because you get to see what their interests are and it’s their own personal account so nothing has to be approved by their publicists and such. You can see the real person inside your idol and the way they express themselves. Don’t worry about creepers following you either, because you control who is allowed to follow you and view your photos with privacy settings. Overall Instagram is a great app to have.

December 21st, 2012 – The End of the World

This Friday is December 21st, 2012 supposedly the end of the world.  Why do people believe this? Well because the Mayan calendar ends on this day and people think this means the world is going to end on this date.  Why would they believe this? Because the Mayan calendar was very accurate considering the fact that is was created thousands of years ago. Many people seem to believe this is legit and that the Earth will explode because the Earth will perfectly align with the Sun (doesn't this happen every Winter Solstice?). There has even been a movie made of this supposed event.
Personally, I do not believe the world is going to end.  Just because the Mayan Calendar ends on this day does not mean the world is going to end.  Who knows, maybe they ran out of space.  Or perhaps they were never able to finish the entire calendar because their civilization was almost completely destroyed and taken over.  What do you think? Do you think the world is going to end? Anyways I believe you should live life to the fullest every day because who knows what the future will bring you.

Support

Support.
A simple word that means a lot to not only athletes but everyone around you.
During a sports game, regardless of how the team is doing, a cheer from the sidelines can create such an impact to the team that is fighting and competing. When a team is doing bad, the sidelines can cheer them up and give them strength, when the team is doing well, the cheer will keep them going.
We absorb from our environment. If the environment is gloomy, the players on court would potentially become gloomy and do bad, however, if the sideline gives off a friendly and a "fighting", "add oil", "gambate", or a "you got this!" vibe, the players on court will eventually do better.
Support also means a lot of things. Many people were affected by the recent hurricane Sandy and by supporting these unfortunate people, we can donate what we have to them, or by ending our regards and prayers to the recent killing at Sandy Hooks Elementary School.

Support can range from building a foundation to a new building to support those in desperate need. Either way, support a good thing and not one person can have enough of it. SO, next time the school has a basketball game or a wrestling match, come out and support because not only will it be fun, you are also subconsciously helping the ones on court.

Youtube parodies

I’ve learned over the past years that the best way to procrastinate is to watch videos, specifically YouTube Videos.  On YouTube there are so many different things you can watch, a How-To video, a vlog, parodies, the list is endless.
Parodies are really funny to watch because they recreate something, and sometimes it makes the original look better. When I’m in a parody-watching mood I look up The Hillywood Show: http://www.youtube.com/user/JckSparrow and The Key of Awesome: http://www.youtube.com/show/keyofawesome. The Hillywood Show is something I recently discovered, and the videos are made by these two sisters Hilly and Hannah and they make parodies of big-time movies like Breaking Dawn, or Harry Potter. The videos are not that long, maybe 8 minutes and they’re done well, editing is good, sound is good. After the videos are made, maybe a few days later they release a Behind the Scenes video, these videos are really long, like 30 minutes but they basically show you every aspect  of making a complicated video like the ones they do. The Behind-the- Scenes videos is what I like the most because they show you the mistakes that happens, and  its really entertaining, I find myself bursting out into laughter a lot. Check them out!
The Key of Awesome is something I found out years ago, and what they do is make funny parodies on #1 Music Hits. Unlike a lot of parodies ive seen, The Key of Awesome change the lyrics around and make it their own, their videos are only 3-4 minutes long. Like the Hillywood Show, the Key of Awesome also have Behind-the-Scenes videos, showing the “special effects” they do, for example, how they show puke in a video, and how they had a girl fall down the stairs. Check them out too!

2-1 & 3-3

2-1

A great start to the new season, the boys won at home against Henry Street 62-44. The Boys’
team is currently on a 2 game winning streak, and we’ll see to it that it will continue to rise.

The game started off with the Blue Devils winning the tip, and easily rallied for a 6 point lead
early on. As halftime came, we were still up by 6, but as Coach Soskind had said, “we should not be
winning by 6, but rather, by 16.” The game was close at the half, just like the game we had against JKO,
but as the second half started, we were easily sliding through their defense, getting steals, simple plays,
and although our defense wasn’t working correctly, we were able to manage an 18-point lead against a
team we had to beat. The game was another improvement both offensively and defensively. Everyone
played in the game, except for those that were injured, and we were able to use everyone to score, to
do anything that would help win us the game. In the end, the fans were a great support to our team,
and we’ll continue to win!

3-3
As the season for the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team continues, the final record as of this week is 3-3. This
week was a bad week of basketball, since we lost 3 straight games. (The game against ICE was forfeited
because ICE did not have their roster up, which means an automatic defeat, even if they won the game).

On Tuesday, we opened up a game against East Side Community, who was off to a poor start in the
season. The intensity level for East Side was overwhelming our team, and we were down early, giving up
12 easy points to East Side in the 1st quarter. The whole game, East Side had held the lead until the 4th
quarter, where we started to make a run, and eventually at the final minute, Peter Lok stole the ball and
scored the game-tying lay-up. Then we fouled, and they were up by 1 point. I lost the ball at the end of
the game, which caused us to lose, but when the scores were checked again, we had actually lost by 6,
so we would have never came back.

The next game was against PACE, and we started off with amazing intensity, and PACE was not ready
both defensively and offensively. As the game continued however, we began to lose intensity, and our
defensive plays were not going well. We weren’t rebounding by boxing out, and we weren’t playing with
confidence. We lost the game by 12, but it should’ve been a close game.

The final game was against Eleanor Roosevelt Huskies, who proved to be a tough team from the start.
They were intimidating, with a 6’6” center, but height doesn’t win games; the better team wins. We got
off to a poor start, scoring only 3 points nearing the end of the first quarter. As the game progressed, we
were able to get some points here and there, but ultimately, ELRO dominated the entire game, and we
lost by double digits for our second straight game.
We need to play better as a team and make the right decisions. We were not controlling our tempo, but
making our own plays which weren’t working. We’ll continue to improve, and we hope to see more fans
come out to our games!

GTA V Details

Rockstar has released new details about the new Grand Theft Auto V. There will be 3 new playable characters whose names are Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Michael was a former bank robber who is now in witness protection. His wife spent all of his fortunes and now he’s back in the game. Trevor is a psychopath who is constantly taking various drugs and he’s prone to violence. Franklin is the youngest of the trio and he works as a repo man. The 3 characters work together to perform heists which will be a big part of the game. Each character has a skillset and you can switch between each character for different perspectives. Someone could be performing the heist while someone else is providing sniper fire. The game will take place in Los Santos and it’s said to be the largest map ever created by Rockstar. You will be able to explore underwater locations as well. The car mechanics are being tweaked so that the cars stick to the ground more and have more physics. Shooting and melee combat are also being tweaked and pedestrians will have more realistic movements thanks to motion capture technology. Characters will be unable to own real estate but they will be able to spend their money on in-game economy.

Soskind

Soskind.
I seriously think the best thing a coach can do is kneel on one knee in front of his/her players. It's just really heart warming to see that. I really do not know why. Maybe it's the way he leans into his players to make sure they hear every word he says. Maybe it's the position of his body that tells the supporters as well as the team that he's IN the game. He's in it to win it.
A coach is really an energy booster in a game. When players return to the bench during a time out, it's the coach's motivational words that give players faith to carry on.
As an athlete, I understand how it feels like to be energy drained after playing. It almost seems impossible to carry out for the remaining time of the game. Hearing words of acceptance, encouragement, and tactics to execute makes me feel all better again. The coach has that faith instilled into you and that’s when it hits you: the game isn’t over yet.
It’s like that moment when you become weary in a marathon and you just have a little bit more to run. I remember my 8th grade social studies teacher quoting someone about pushing the last mile when you’re about to give up. Right when you’re about to drop, you give the last all you’ve got.
You’re closer than you were yesterday.”

May all athletes continue to play the sport(s) they love and bless all the coaches that have given their players hope and faith to play.

Concerts

We all have a favorite band or singer that we really enjoy to listen and would love the opportunity to see them sing it live. Concerts a great experience not only do you get to see your favorite artist/idol but they perform their songs. However not everyone has had the opportunity to experience a concert. Concerts can be quite expensive depending on the venue and seat. Madison Square Garden is always pricey, if you want to be front and center ticket prices range from 600 to the thousands. It’s not cheap to sit front row, and the not-so-great tickets are still about 200 dollars. That’s not all, for popular concerts tickets sell out in the blink of an eye, then you have to spend countless times calling Ticket Master or browsing Stubhub in a desperate search for tickets. But don’t let that stop you! Try to win tickets, z100 is always giving away free tickets and everyone has a chance. You never know maybe you’ll be the lucky winner. I remember last year I won 4 tickets to the Black Eyed Peas concert that was held in Central Park, and it was one of the best memories I’ve had with my best friends. We were front row and got waved to by Fergie and Taboo. I love going to concerts but it’s so hard to get tickets for the ones I want to see because they sell out so fast. I highly recommend going to one if you haven’t already.

6 games for $1.00

This is a charity that requires you to donate a $1 to get 6 games. If you give more than a certain amount, they will give you 2 more games to play. However, these games are only for PC. They also required you to have a Steam account. It is self-explanatory. This is not a scam since I donated and got my 6 games. You are helping those in need and you get something back. This is a win win situation. However, they don't accept cash and only accept credit cards or through paypal.

Game Review: Ōkami (Wii)

Hi everyone,

This time, I’m back with my first game review~ *imaginary applause all around* …OTL Anyways, Ōkami was one of the first Wii games I’ve ever played, and I completely loved it. For those of you who have a Wii, if you haven’t played this gave before, you should give it a try.

*SPOILER ALERTS BELOW~*

Summary:
Set in the ancient world of Japan (called Nippon), the start of the game flashes back to a time 100 years ago, in which Shiranui, a white wolf, and Nagi, a swordsman, work together to fight Orochi, an eight-headed monster that threatens Kamiki Village, Nagi’s home, and Nami, Nagi’s love interest. Orochi demands the sacrifice of a maiden every year in return for not attacking Kamiki Village. Eventually, they manage to defeat and seal Orochi away, with Nagi’s sword acting as the seal.

Now back to the present, Susano, Nagi’s descendant and lookalike, believes himself to be the greatest warrior in the world and decides to pull out Nagi’s sword to prove that the story was false. Unfortunately, this breaks Nagi’s seal, and Orochi escapes into the world once again. Nagi flees in terror as Orochi starts to roam the lands, consuming all the life force from every living being.

Sakuya, a wood sprite and the guardian of Kamiki Village, summons Amaterasu, a white wolf and sun goddess who is thought to be the reincarnation of Shiranui by the villagers (they can’t see the patterns on Amaterasu; they only see a white wolf). Sakuya asks for Amaterasu to remove the curse from the lands by using her power to bring out the sun again (this is done by using the wiimote and drawing a circle in the sky). Issun, a tiny creature called a Poncle, is responsible for increasing praise for Amaterasu (doing this increases Amaterasu’s powers), accompanies Amaterasu on the way.

After Amaterasu brings back the sun, she is charged with the task of finding the other celestial gods and goddesses to gain their powers and save the world from Orochi and other evil forces.

What I liked about it:
I loved the game’s music, especially when the lands were being purified. I thought it correctly portrayed certain scenes in the game. I also liked the artwork, as all the drawings and even the gameplay artwork was very beautiful and colorful. The gameplay was really creative, as I never thought of using the wiimote as a brush. Furthermore, as Amaterasu, I enjoyed the fact that I was able to roam the lands and (sometimes) randomly go into people’s houses and scare them with my goddess powers.

I also liked how long the story lasted. I had to play Ōkami for a very long time before I finished it, and some parts were somewhat difficult, so sometimes a walkthrough was needed. I also thought the story was very interesting and emotional at times, as there was this sad separation scene, and I cried when it happened.

What I disliked about it:
There was voice over in the game, but I disliked how all the voices were just mumblings. In the Japanese version of Ōkami, all the characters spoke actual words. It would have been much more fun and cool if I could hear the actual characters speak, instead of hearing nothing but people mumbling.

I also disliked how I sometimes had difficulty in drawing certain symbols with the wiimote (I had to redraw it over and over again, and sometimes, the game recognized the symbol wrong and made undesired things happen).

Overall:
I thought this was a fantastic game that includes a lot of adventure and provides game play that can be challenging at times, so if you like these elements in a game (adventure and challenge), you should try playing Ōkami.

Battle Royale

Battle Royale
Hey there boys and girls, back again with another movie review. Now this one’s good see, Battle Royale. It’s made by the Japanese, basically it’s about a 9th grade class being entered in to BR. They were selected by the government because they were one of the most horrible classes, and I mean their students were bad. Now in this movie, students were all horrible, so that is why the government came up with it. Anyhow, once you enter, you are forced to fight and kill, all your other classmates until one is left standing.  Refusal in participation results in death. You also were necklaces that explode if one person is not left standing in 3 days, you’re in a danger zone, or if you try to take it off.  You are given a bag full of bread and water, a map, and a weapon. These weapons are random, some are good, some suck, and some are special. This was a great movie in my opinion. It’s got some good blood and gore, so that’s why I liked it.  But there’s also the idea that the hunger games was based off this. That because this came out before the hunger games, and yes it has a book. There is also a second movie. Either way, it’s much better than the hunger game (this is just my opinion, and I hope it does not offend anyone). So you should check it out sometime, they’ve got it on Netflix. It also something to think about, imagines this happened in real life? 9th grade class is pit to kill each other for horrible behavior… Hey, I’m not intending something, but I find it comical. Alright then, be sure to check this out and my other post.

Updates

It’s almost the end of the year and there have been a lot of updates on the games that are said to be released next year if there are no unfortunate delays. Naughty Dog had finally given us a release date for their next game, The Last of Us which will be release on May 7th, 2013. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world with looters, zombie like creatures and destruction.
Dark Souls II had been announced through a trailer that features a warrior fighting multiple enemies and traveling through many locations. Check out the trailer if you can. The game will feature a new character and a new story line.
Dead Island Riptide has also been announced which will continue to follow the characters from the original Dead Island games. The game is set to be released on April 23, 2013. Although the first game had mixed reviews, the upcoming title will feature new game play elements in its campaign like fighting against waves of zombies and building defenses and setting traps.
BioShock Infinite has been delayed once again and is now set to be released on March 26, 2013. The director says it’s mainly polishing and bug fixing at this point.

Brandon and Leah - Life Happens

So this is a song that came out a long time ago, earlier this year. And it’s not one of those songs you would hear on the radio, yes that means there isn’t any dubstep. The reason I like this song so much is because it has a positive message, it inspires me to get up and want to do something important. The artist names are Brandon and Leah, Brandon is Bruce Jenner’s son who doesn’t really want any fame from the Kardashian sisters, Leah his girlfriend is the sole singer in the song.  I discovered this song watching the reality TV show of the family, when Bruce Jenner was trying to get his wife to manage them, Brandon didn’t want it.
Lyrics from the song:
So many reasons for you to be happy
So many reasons for you to be smiling
But you're not about to see 'em, you're not about to feel 'em, you're not about to be 'em
You don't believe 'em
So many reasons for you to be angry
So many reasons, it's not the way you planned it
But all you can do is see 'em, all you can do is feel 'em, all you can do is let them be

Life happens
While listening to the song you can hear the ukulele, and acoustic guitar in the Caribbean- flavored beat, while watching the video, you see them at the beach, which I think fits the song really well. I’ve hit the replay button on this song so many times, and I know you will too, check the song out on YouTube,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_qC1OKBpro

Seriously, relieving stress

Hola!
So, I’ve been thinking of ways to relief stress, especially since we are all BCCHS students (and staff). Of course, we all get projects and papers due right before break. But how exactly do you write a paper with no inspiration? The color GREEN! Green colored objects tend to give me inspiration. It is also easy on the eye, meaning that it’s not a “harsh” color to look at. Something like neon pink would be a “harsh” color.

The color BLUE is a calming color. So, de-stressing can be staring at something blue. Like the layout of Microsoft Word (LOL), or the sky…

As for me, when I need a break from doing work, I walk around the room/hallway that I’m in. I often open and close my fridge to make it seem like I’m actually doing something. Something else I do is look out the window when I need a break. I tend to just stare off into something in the distance and blank out for a good minute or so.

What makes you stressed? And how do YOU deal with it?

Oh and on a last note: Gregory’s coffee is supposed to keep the snowflake deal around for the entire month of December, but due to us totally abusing the deal, they have stopped the promotion… Oh wells.

TV in December

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, It’s December! That’s means Christmas is right around the corner and so is Winter break. December is one of the months I watch a lot of TV. Every single channel you watch in December and anytime of time of the day you will most likely see something about Christmas. I love Christmas movies they’re the best. They just get you in a jolly, sentimental mood when you watch them. I literally watch A Christmas Story every Christmas; I could probably quote most of the movie. Also the commercials are all about Christmas shopping and the specials. I love how limited edition stuff come out around this time of year. You also see all these new products that were just made on commercials, which give you ideas to add to your wish list. Another thing I love are the Christmas specials like about every show out there has a Christmas special every year and they are always so interesting. Christmas specials are one of the best episodes to a show. Even old discontinued shows and cartoons from our childhood are aired during this time of the year. This time of year is perfect for watching entertaining shows or movies on TV.

Gangnam Style vs. Baby

Gangnam Style by PSY recently surpassed Justin Bieber’s Baby with the
most views on YouTube ever.  Now Gangnam Style has acquired around 870
million views while Baby has 808 million views in comparison.  It’s
crazy how many views Gangnam Style has gotten in less than 6 months!
One of the reasons it was able to achieve so many views was the fact
that people wanted to beat Justin Bieber’s record.  They would comment
on how they were racing to beat out the Baby video for most views
ever.  It also has the most likes ever as well.
Many people are very happy of this achievement because they dislike
Bieber, but many of his fans are outraged by the fact that PSY beat
the superstar.  However, what is funny is that both artists have the
same manager.  The video achieves millions of views everyday so it is
pretty unlikely that the video Baby will win its spot back.  What do
you guys think? Do you think Baby by Justin Bieber should have been
knocked off the number one spot or no? Also do you think Gangnam Style
by PSY will be beaten anytime soon?

SOS CORNER:
Are you in control of your own destiny? The answer to this question lies in seven letters; C-O-N-T-R-O-L! Do you set goals and plan how you will achieve them or do you fly by the seat of your pants? A disciplined step by step approach ensures you will maximize your potential, and increase the percentage of your power to accomplish.  I know that this may seem like more work, like the transposing notebook I am always on you about starting. However, no one ever said that the process would be easy. It all lies in how comfortable you are being uncomfortable.  Continuing to challenge yourself is the key to self management and growth. Don’t let your fear of failure prevent you from doing what is necessary. Let the thought of failure motivate you. Small accomplishments will build the confidence you need to set your own course. During this thanksgiving season, we should take the time to look at the big, and realize how fortunate we are to have the ability to fulfill our potential. Don’t allow time to keep passing you by. Grab the bull by the horns today and begin your journey.
 Have a wonderful holiday!

Model U.N
Diplomacy has been a recurring theme throughout history. With tension building around the world, this strategy must be employed to insure the safety of mankind. In order to maintain peace for all people and to promote diplomatic relations, the U.N was formed in 1945, after World War II. Originally, there were 51 member states, now an impressive 193 member states including the United States of America. The Model U.N. (MUN), run by Mr. Harper, is dedicated to educating the youth about how world diplomacy works. Through a mock conference, each school is assigned a member state to represent as its delegation to the United Nations. The United Nations has multiple bodies, with two students assigned to each. Some include the Human Rights Committee and the Security Council.
Students spend months researching their specific topic and aim towards writing a position paper and presenting it. In May, a mock conference is held in New York City, where students from all over the world gather and discuss their various topics. They engage in debates and ultimately draft resolutions. Last year, BCCHS represented the magnificent country of Guatemala. Currently, we have not been assigned a country. Nevertheless, we have started the club and are educating some of our newer members about the role of The United Nations. Model U.N. is a brilliant choice when looking for a club. Realizing that the world of tomorrow is essentially controlled by you can be a powerful motivator to get involved. If anyone has any questions, you can contact Mr. Harper, Ms. Lau, or Mr. Sparrow.

Baruch Wrestling
Baruch Wrestling is unlike any other sports team. Compared to my other experiences with sports teams, wrestling takes up all of my free time. As of now, my life only consists of two things; school and wrestling. I wish I could squeeze some more activities into my week, but now that wrestling season started there is absolutely no time for anything. Don’t get me wrong, I really love what I’m doing and I will never consider dropping the sport. Wrestling has taught me how to effectively use my time. The time I would usually use to watch television or play video games is now being used to do my homework and study. This has also led to me becoming a more diligent worker. Baruch Wrestling has done more than change my time management and work ethic. It also became the catalyst which gave my whole lifestyle a much needed 180 degree turn. Before wrestling, I ate whatever I wanted without thinking about the repercussions. These decisions made me overweight and unhealthy in a very short amount of time. In fact at one point I weighed over 200 pounds, but now I work out everyday and eat a balanced diet. These small changes not only led to me feeling much better physically, but it also turned my 200 pounds into 182 pounds and most importantly, a better me.

A Promising Team Arises
Baruch’s boys’ basketball team has never lacked talent. Each year, a fresh crop of boys stepped onto the court with a new multitude of skills and experience. Unfortunately, each year’s success remained paltry as the team struggled to find substantial wins. This year, it’s a similar story. A very talented group steps on the court with the hope of rising well above the team’s past. With seniors that have four years of experience, and underclassmen with a lot of potential, the Blue Devils are teeming with the promise of a winning season.          Perhaps the evidence for the word “teeming” lies in the coach Howard Soskind’s struggle to assemble a team this year. With only twelve spots available, Soskind knew it would be a long process cutting students off the team. But Soskind, an ideological man to say the least, was not concerned with making a team that could jump high or dunk the ball. He was concerned with putting together a team that would stay intense throughout the whole season. A team always looking to work and improve. Even though there were only twelve spots available, Soskind decided to keep thirteen. Perhaps his motive was to keep the players engaged, so no one could slack off without losing a jersey to the thirteenth man. Perhaps he believed that each and every one of the thirteen people could come to practice and the games prepared to work with an unyielding passion. Either way, Coach Howard Soskind’s choice to keep thirteen boys shows the promise of this year’s team – the talent is bursting out of the team’s seams. It is simply up to the Baruch players to rise to the occasion and prove they deserve their spot on the team. Along with the Baruch community’s support, it is highly possible that this year a new precedent will be set for future Baruchians. Success only exists in terms of hard work, intensity, and dedication.

Girls Basketball Opener
The beginning of the season has begun. With practice every day and having new Coach Jessenia. Although this is the first year she is coaching the team, we got acquainted to her practices fairly quick. We worked on handling skills and offense/defense drills. We had our first scrimmage on November 12th against a school from Queens. Although we didn't have a crowd to cheer us on, we still played hard, with our returnees, Miyna, Sydney, Patty, Mikaela and Alexis starting the game. The score was kept tied for almost the first 2 quarters but as the second half came around we pushed hard and the intensity level increased which led to a team win by 20. Everyone got a chance to play and show their talent by making 3 pointers and getting rebounds. We may not have started off as strong as we thought for our first scrimmage but we will keep that in mind for our first game of the season. Come support us on Monday, November 26th at 4:30 p.m. at the Baruch College gym against Washington Irving.

Baruch Wrestling Needs You!
Head Coach Frank Portella’s catchphrase this season is: “We are winning the City Tournament on February 10th!” He often follows up with asking, “Who will be   an individual City Champ this year?” Coach is ecstatic about how many people we have on the team. Currently, Baruch Wrestling has at least one athlete per weight class from 99 lbs. to 220 lbs.  In fact, the only weight class we are missing is 285. In order to fill that spot, we need a wrestler at least 210 pounds. Prior to this year, Baruch Wrestling started every competition down by 30 points; that meant that every school we competed against had a 30-point advantage! Now it’s time for Baruch Wrestling to turn the tides on other schools and start matches with the advantage! Don’t fret if you’re worried about being good at wrestling, we have had over ten new wrestlers who just two weeks ago had no idea how to wrestle, but by working hard and committing themselves they’re almost ready for their first competition. Baruch Wrestling has six assistant coaches who pay close attention to each of us, and help guide us through the process of becoming a wrestler. The first few days of wrestling is always the most challenging, but if you really stick with it and never quit you can become an important part of this team too. Remember, seniors Isaiah Blake and Paul Schoenberg didn’t become city champions over night. So don’t let the excuse of, “I’ll try it next year,” or “I might not be good at it,” discourage you. Join Baruch Wrestling and help us win the City title while learning life skills that can only be taught on the mat. Baruch Wrestling needs you! For information email frank@BaruchWrestling.com

Fundraising Journey
Fundraising is a major issue for all our athletic teams. It is not easy to raise the funds necessary to run a good program. A major draw on our budget is our gym rental from Baruch College. This leaves little money for official and tournament fees, uniforms, and other necessary equipment. The girl’s basketball team started to collect plastic bottles. Even though the girls only raised 40 dollars in one month, the team is looking forward to getting a new game ball. The team is going to think of some more fundraising ideas to get new uniforms for next season. Don't forget to bring in your bottles and cans. The competition ends on December 17th. The girl’s first game is on November 26th. Please come out to support.

What’s up with the National Honor Society?
We’re working hard! Last year, the induction of new members and celebration of graduating members set the stage for a new year.  We have been meeting every Friday at 7:45AM to organize and prepare for upcoming events. Every member of NHS has worked hard to reach this point, so now we’re ready to set things in motion.
We will always be achieving new tasks throughout the year, but recently we have been firing up our annual Halloween Candy Bag Sale! We are making sure this year is organized and successful, so we’re making these bags extra special. For the low price of $2.00/bag, you can send your friends or teachers a handmade, thoughtful, and “Halloween-y” delight. We designed the bags so that each one has enough chocolate candies as well as non-chocolate ones, such as Skittles and Twizzlers. In addition, we also snuck in a spooky surprise that everyone loves…but you’ll have to buy one to see!
Later on, we are planning on doing a whole bunch of helpful community service. National Honor Society lives for achieving worthwhile goals by helping others in our community; we encourage you to do the same. This includes volunteering at senior homes, cleaning parks/beaches, and fundraising money for needy organizations that help the less fortunate. We are also starting to dive into new things, but we’re not ready to announce them yet. Stick with us and you’ll see!
- Molly McGill

Rough Preseason Start
We have opened up our preseason losing our first three contests. During these games, the team has demonstrated the ability to succeed. Unfortunately we have not committed for the entire 32 minutes.  Lapses in defense, missed lay-ups, not running hard, are examples of behaviors that need attention. We need to improve our chemistry and confidence. With a more disciplined approach at practice, we hope to achieve our potential this season. Pre season for us is not about winning or the points. It’s about getting better. I think the team has a good chance of making the playoff this year. The real test will be Tuesday, November 27th when we play ICE in the season opener. Come out and support!
